Cat Vaccinations in Pasadena, TX
Building lasting protection against serious, preventable diseases at every stage of your cat's life.
What Makes Cat Vaccinations an Investment
Vaccines shouldn't be thought of as a recurring cost, they're an investment in your cat's future. The diseases vaccines protect against are often dangerous to your cat and expensive to treat once contracted. Some of these diseases are even zoonotic, meaning they could be passed on to members of your human family as well. By keeping your cat current on vaccinations, you're protecting your cat, your household, and your wallet all at once. At Spencer Animal Hospital, we deliver safe, effective vaccines for cats throughout Pasadena, TX.
Building Immunity: Your Kitten's Vaccination Timeline
A vaccination protocol begins early, with a series of vaccines given throughout your kitten's first year of life to build up their immunity. This early series is one of the most important steps in your kitten's development, laying the groundwork for a healthier adult life.
- 8 Weeks: Kittens receive their first FVRCP vaccine, which protects against feline distemper (panleukopenia), rhinotracheitis, and calicivirus.
- 12 Weeks: The vaccination series continues with a follow-up FVRCP dose along with the feline leukemia vaccine.
- 16 Weeks: At this stage, kittens receive another FVRCP booster, a feline leukemia booster, and their rabies vaccine.
- 1 Year: The initial series is completed with a final round of FVRCP, feline leukemia, and rabies vaccines, setting the stage for your cat's ongoing adult vaccination schedule.
Core and Non-Core Vaccines for Adult Cats
Once your cat completes their initial kitten series, we tailor their continuing vaccination plan around their individual lifestyle. That said, there are certain vaccines we recommend for all adult cats, along with additional vaccines that depend on how your cat lives day to day.
Core vaccines are recommended for every cat, regardless of lifestyle, because they protect against diseases that are widespread, highly contagious, or especially severe:
- FVRCP: administered every three years
- Rabies: administered every year
Non-core vaccines are recommended selectively, based on your cat's specific risk factors:
- Feline Leukemia: recommended only for outdoor cats, and administered on a yearly basis
If your cat spends any time outdoors or has contact with other cats whose vaccination status is unknown, feline leukemia protection is worth discussing at your next visit.
